Perfectly PEZ Display Opens
at The Strong Museum on January 8

Explore pop culture history through dozens of PEZ-inspired artifacts at the new Perfectly PEZ display opening at The Strong museum on Friday, January 8. The display features dozens of mechanical PEZ dispensers—from Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny, to Superman and Batman—and related materials, including a PEZ-azzle jigsaw puzzle, card games, holiday ornaments featuring Bob the Builder and Santa, and more.

“Starting as breath mints for adults, PEZ received a makeover to fruit flavors in the 1950s and a dispenser along with it featuring cartoon character heads to suit a new audience of children,” says Christopher Bensch, The Strong’s vice president for collections. “The result was something that looked like a toy and gave you candy—just about as good as it gets for most kids. The range of characters from popular culture that have appeared on the containers ever since then has kept PEZ appealing to generation after generation and has inspired an ardent group of collectors who love the quest for rare and exceptional variations.”

The Strong acquired its collection of PEZ-inspired artifacts from collector Robbie Brunner. Brunner’s collection started as an amusing joke nearly 40 years ago, but soon progressed into an avid hobby. The collection includes a range of characters that will be on display—from Star Wars figures to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles—as well as vehicles such as race cars and mini-tractor trailers. Also included will be holiday-themed PEZ materials celebrating Halloween, Easter, Valentine’s Day, and more.

Perfectly PEZ will be on display at the museum through April 4, 2016, and is included with general museum admission fees.
