Gelser Library FAQs

What is the Gelser Library?

The Strong is one of only a handful of museums in the nation to offer guests a circulating library. The Grada Hopeman Gelser Library is a mini branch of the Rochester Public Library, made possible through a special partnership with the Rochester Public Library and the larger Monroe County Library System (MCLS), and was established in 1999.

Books for all reading levels can be found throughout the museum in book nooks housed among the exhibits. Guests can check out books with their MCLS library card at the Gelser Library kiosk, located on the museum’s first floor in the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Lobby, and return them to the museum or at any MCLS library.

What kind of books does the Gelser Library have?

Books are selected to complement the themes of the museum’s outstanding exhibits and are chosen for values of interest, information, entertainment, and enlightenment for readers from birth through adulthood.

The library strives to reflect the diverse backgrounds and interests of museum guests and members within the limits of budget and space. The collection does not promote a singular belief or viewpoint; it aims to provide a balanced representation of perspectives across its holdings.

How do I check out a book?

To check out a book from the Gelser Library, you need an MCLS library card, and your account needs to be in good standing (it has been used within the past 12 months and has fines and/or fees less than $20).

If you do not have an MCLS library card and are a resident of Monroe County, you can register for a library card at any MCLS library. You will be required to show a form of identification to verify identity and county residence. Youth and children’s cards can be issued at most ages with approval of a guardian. Corporate and business card registration is also available.

If you are not a resident of Monroe County, you can obtain a free Restricted Library card that can be used only at The Strong.

My card is blocked due to fines… what do I do?

You will not be able to check out books if there are charges on your card totaling more than $20. These charges can be paid online or at any MCLS Library.

To pay online, log into your account and click on “View Fines.” Use the check box in the upper right corner to select all fines to pay or use the check boxes next to each fine to pay individual fees. Click on “Pay Fines” to complete your transaction.

The Central Library is located just over a half a mile from The Strong—a 10-minute walk or a 3-minute drive. The Central Library validates the first hour of parking at the South Ave parking garage.

My card is expired… what do I do?

Your MCLS card will expire if you haven’t used it in the past 12 months or if it is an Out-of-County card. You will need to renew your card at any MCLS library. You will be required to show a form of identification to verify identity and county residence.

The Central Library is located just over a half a mile from The Strong – a 10-minute walk or a 3-minute drive. The Central Library validates the first hour of parking at the South Ave parking garage.

Which barcode on the book do I scan?

At the Gelser Library kiosk, first scan the barcode on your library card. The barcode on our books—starting with 39077—is in the upper right corner on the back of the book and in the upper right corner of first page of the book.

I still need help!
