Kinetic King Creates Exploding Popsicle-Stick Art
at Design Zone Opening Weekend Celebration
Saturday, June 2 & Sunday, June 3

Set your synapses simmering with unique performance art and fun family challenges at the Design Zone Opening Weekend Celebration at the National Museum of Play at The Strong  Saturday, June 2 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, June 3 from noon to 4 p.m.

Be blown away by the artistic creations of Tim Fort, the Kinetic King, who reached celebrity status with five appearances on America’s Got Talent for his kinetic, chain-reaction, exploding Popsicle-stick creations. He’s set two Guinness World Records for the largest “stick bombs” and had an installation in the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C.  (www.lunatim.com/kinart/kinetic.shtml). Museum guests are invited to watch as Fort builds several explosive installations for the museum in celebration of the opening of Design Zone. Detonations take place on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., and on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. (Watch a video of a previous detonation.)

Enjoy these additional ongoing weekend activities:

  • Team up with family and friends for paper airplane races.
  • Pack up a pile of puzzlers to take home such as tangrams, pentominoes, never-ending folding cards, design-your-own board games, and more. Become an author or illustrator and create your own book.
  • Build and detonate your own Popsicle-stick creation or dominoes design.

Visit Design Zone where you can discover how video game developers, music producers, roller coaster designers and other creative problem solvers use math and science to do amazing things. Feel the beat in a DJ recording studio, pedal to victory in a full-body bike race, create on-screen action in a video game design studio, design and test a virtual roller coaster, and more at engaging art, music, and engineering zones.

The Design Zone exhibit and opening weekend activities are included with general museum admission fees.

Design Zone remains at the National Museum of Play through September 3, 2012.

Design Zone was produced and is toured by the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. This exhibit was made possible by a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant.
