Playing with Politics Display
Opens July 8
at The Strong

Cast your ballot and explore the satirical side of campaigning at the new Playing with Politics display opening at The Strong® museum on Friday, July 8. The display includes dozens of rarely seen artifacts from The Strong’s collections of political playthings, such as White House-inspired paper houses and puzzle sets; Barbie for President dolls; political-party-inspired board games, playing cards, and jigsaw puzzles; Presidential-themed paper doll sets and games featuring the Bush, Kennedy, and Reagan families; and more.Playing with Politics

“Although presidential elections are serious matters and have shaped the course of American history, it’s still possible to view politics and candidates from a playful perspective. The objects on display in Playing with Politics illustrate some of the ways kids and adults have had fun over the years with toys and games that relate to presidents and the political process,” says Chris Bensch, vice president for collections and chief curator.

View a humorous version of the classic “pin the tail” game with Selchow and Righter Company’s Grand Old Party game from 1890, where players would blindly stick a bag of peanuts near the political party’s cloth elephant mascot. See satirical toys based on President Nixon, including a pair of table tennis paddles and a ring toss game. Take a trip back in time with a puzzle set made in 1924 depicting Theodore Roosevelt’s presidential election.

Playing with Politics will be on display at the museum through November 14, 2016, and is included with general museum admission fees.
