April 16 Deadline for Papers for
Fourth IEEE International Games Innovation Conference
in Rochester, New York, September 7–9, 2012

Co-hosted by RIT’s School of Interactive Games and Media
and the International Center for the History of Electronic Games®

The deadline nears for submission of abstracts for the Fourth IEEE Consumer Electronics Society Innovation Conference (“Designing for Play”), taking place September 7 to 9, 2012, in Rochester, New York, on the campus of The Strong®, home of the National Museum of Play® and the International Center for the History of Electronic Games (ICHEG). Co-hosted by RIT’s School of Interactive Games and Media, the conference is a platform for disseminating peer-reviewed papers describing innovative research and development of video game technologies. The submission deadline for abstracts is Monday, April 16, 2012.

The Society welcomes participation from academia, industry, and government and is currently soliciting short papers (four pages), long papers (five to eight pages), posters, and ideas for panel sessions. Categories include (but are not limited to) Multi-player Games; Game Platforms; Beyond Entertainment; Design, Development, and Production; Interfaces; Technology; User Experience; Play; and Game Design and Development Education.     

Attendees to the 2012 conference will have a unique opportunity to hear groundbreaking presentations, network with video game researchers and developers from around the globe, tour one of the world’s largest collections of video games, and attend sessions featuring Seamus Blackley, current president of Innovative Leisure and co-creator of the Xbox; Ian Bogost, professor at Georgia Tech and founding partner of Persuasive Games; Vincent John Vincent, co-CEO, president, and co-founder of GestureTek, Inc; and Ian Schreiber, game designer and co-author of Breaking into the Game Industry: Advice for a Successful Career from Those Who Have Done It.

Noteworthy dates: abstract deadline, April 16; author notification, May 14; final drafts, June 18; final acceptance, July 20. Following the conference, selected papers may be considered for publication in IEEE Transactions of Consumer Electronics, The Strong’s American Journal of Play, and the Journal of Game Design and Development Education.

About RIT School of Interactive Game and Media: Rochester Institute of Technology is a pioneer in the field of video game design and development education and is ranked by the Princeton Review as among the top10 graduate and undergraduate schools for video game design programs. RIT was one of the first universities to offer a course in game design and development. Its Bachelor of Science in game design and development provides a broad-based undergraduate education in computing while exposing students to the breadth of game development processes. Students are required to complete coursework in the liberal arts, social sciences and the laboratory sciences. Students who pursue RIT’s master’s degree in game design and development take a series of core courses in such areas as emerging technologies, electronic entertainment and history of games. Majors are offered in game engine development and artificial intelligence for games. The degree culminates with a capstone project in which students create their own games.
