TINKERTOY®: Build Your Imagination™ Events
at the National Museum of Play®

  • Building Bonanza on Opening Day (February 5)
  • Build! Build! Build! School-Break Week (February 19–27)

Get your creative wheels—and spokes—turning at the TINKERTOY Building Bonanza at the Strong’s National Museum of Play on Saturday, February 5 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The all-day “build-a-thon” for kids and families is held in conjunction with the opening day of the new exhibit TINKERTOY: Build Your Imagination.

What can you build before the clock runs out? A replica of the Eiffel Tower?  A jet plane?  A flower? Museum guests are invited to drop in for one of the 15-minute sessions that run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Actress Sarah Peters adds her theatrical flair to the day, serving as emcee, as she encourages families to dive into tubs full of TINKERTOYs and build their creations while the clock is ticking.

All child participants will receive a prize and one lucky team will be eligible to win one of three additional prizes: A gift certificate to the museum shops; carousel passes (good for 12 rides on the carousel or Strong Express Train); or treats from Louie’s Sweet Shoppe.

Enjoy more opportunities to build—in a BIG way!—in conjunction with the TINKERTOY exhibit during Build, Build, Build! School-Break Week, February 19 through 27. See what oversized, imaginative constructions you can concoct with giant BuilderBLOX, a revolutionary, large-scale building system designed by engineers, architects, and educators to empower children to build BIG structures.

(Note: To accommodate families during the busy February school-break week, when the museum parking lot may become full, the museum will make available a special shuttle service to and from the East End garage that will run continuously from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, February 21 through Thursday, February 24 and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, February 25. The museum is not responsible for fees incurred at off-site parking facilities.)

Enjoy additional opportunities to invent and build in the new TINKERTOY: Build Your Imagination exhibit, which remains on view at the National Museum of Play through May 29.

  • Discover the concept of biomimicry—nature’s influence on design—and match real inventions with their natural inspiration; then, create an inspired design of your own.
  • Learn about filtration as you build ball tracks that illustrate how modern technologies help address the challenge of providing clean water.
  • Explore the concept of renewable energy and use a kid-powered fan to test your own wind-powered TINKERTOY creations.
  • Children ages 3 and older are invited to enter a play area where they can build with a huge assortment of TINKEROY pieces.

The exhibit and all related activities are included with general museum admission fees.
