Big, Scary, and Extinct Display Opens
at The Strong® Museum on September 24
Explore children’s long-standing fascination with dinosaur play at the new Big, Scary, and Extinct display opening at The Strong museum on Saturday, September 24—a companion to the Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice exhibit. The display features dozens of dinosaur toys and related artifacts from The Strong’s collections, ranging from mechanical toys and board games to T-shirts and cereal boxes.
“Children love dinosaurs because they’re larger-than-life, strange, and sometimes terrifying,” says Scott Eberle, vice president for play studies at The Strong. “They’re long-gone, too, a reassuring distance that helps children tap their heroic imaginations comfortably in dino role-playing.”
View dinosaur figures of all shapes and sizes and the fictional creatures that these reptiles inspired, including a Godzilla mechanical toy and a Cyclops Raptor figure based on the movie The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Marvel at a rare booklet from Sinclair Dinoland, an attraction at the 1964–65 New York World’s Fair, and explore the softer side of dinosaurs through a variety of plush toys. See the influence of dinosaurs on other children’s items, including a dinosaur coloring book and Jurassic Park Crunch cereal.
Big, Scary, and Extinct will be on display at the museum through January 8, 2017, and is included with general museum admission fees.
