In this first episode of 2021, you’ll meet Tom Kalinske former CEO of Mattel, Sega of America, Inc., and Leapfrog. You’ll hear firsthand how Tom revived the Barbie and Hot Wheels brands, disrupted the video game industry by marketing Sonic and Sega Genesis to an older age group, and other stories from his legendary career—including what led him to the world of toys and video games. This is a virtual event, registration is required.

Carol D. Simmons Storytime Club

Occurs On: February 22

Celebrate the joy of reading! Hear children’s stories read aloud on selected Mondays at 10:30 a.m. and be whisked away on literary adventures as part of the Carol D. Simmons Storytime Club at The Strong museum. Storytime Club Passports are punched once during each visit. Collect five punches and receive a free children’s book. Print and bring in your passport during your next visit.

Storytime Club is named in honor of Carol D. Simmons, a former children’s librarian in the Pittsford Central School District. The gift is made possible through the generous support of Harvey D. Simmons in loving memory of his wife.

Black Toys and Toymakers: The Story of Shindana

In 2020, The Strong inducted Baby Nancy into its National Toy Hall of Fame. Crafted with Black children in mind, Baby Nancy is the first Black doll that found mass popularity at home and abroad. Learn about Shindana Toys—the Black-owned company behind the groundbreaking doll—at a special, virtual discussion with a panel of experts on its history and significance. Hosted by The Strong’s Christopher Bensch, the 40-minute discussion will delve into the story of Shindana Toys’ creation and evolution, their role in the community, their products, and examples of Black entrepreneurship. It will be followed by a question-and-answer session.
