Marvel at giant sculptures of heroes and villains made entirely from cans of food. Canstruction is an international charity competition that challenges architects, engineers, contractors, and students to design and build large-scale sculptures made from canned food. National Toy hall of Fame Weekend Celebration

National Toy Hall of Fame Celebration Weekend

Occurs On: November 9

Revel in a weekend of activities featuring past inductees, including Barbie and Crayola Crayons. Delight in performances by Checkers the Inventor at noon and 2 and 3:30 p.m. Based in western New York, Checkers the Inventor performs in engaging shows throughout upstate New York libraries. Join Checkers and his robot sidekick, Snoozer, in an interactive show featuring comedy, magic, juggling, and a giant balloon stunt.

At 1 p.m. each day, watch models take the runway in looks inspired by National Toy Hall of Fame inductees and designed by local modeling agency Mary Therese Friel, LLC. All weekend long, celebrate Barbie’s 60th anniversary by dressing her friends in fashionable outfits. Use Crayola Crayons to draw a picture from your imagination and play with enlarged versions of past inductees, including Magic 8 Ball and UNO. Photo courtesy of Joey Hamilton.

That’s the message Children Awaiting Parents (CAP) seeks to share at the Judge Wagner 2019 Heart Gallery—a photography display of children in need of adoptive families, on view during National Adoption Month in November. Portraits taken by volunteer photographers capture each child’s unique personality.

Museum Mondays for Seniors: Margaret Woodbury Strong Guided Tour

Meet history’s playful side at The Strong. This three-hour experience includes general museum admission plus a 20-minute guided tour beginning at 11:30 a.m. about museum founder and philanthropist Margaret Woodbury Strong. Tickets are required and may be purchased online or by calling 585-263-2700. This program is for adults age 55 and older. Photo ID may be requested at check-in.

Enjoy an evening of play designed just for college students after the museum closes to the general public. The night includes discounted admission and full access to the museum’s dozens of exhibits. Play your way through the history of gaming in eGameRevolution and Pinball Playfields, relive your childhood in Sesame Street and Wegmans Super Kids Market, and discover the most iconic toys of all time in the Toy Halls of Fame. Plus, watch a special screening of the indie film Insert Coin, included with College Night admission.

Carol D. Simmons Storytime Club: Giving Thanks

November 4 only, enjoy special activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Sesame Street television series. This month: Giving Thanks. Delight in tales about being thankful and showing gratitude.

The Rochester Americans will celebrate The Strong’s National Toy Hall of Fame when they take on the Binghamton Devils at Blue Cross Arena. Celebrate inductees to the National Toy Hall of Fame with board games in the upper atrium. The first 500 children to the arena will also receive a toy inductee. Museum members can purchase best available seats at a discounted rate in exclusive sections. Learn more and purchase tickets here

Insert Coin

Insert Coin Film Screening

Occurs On: November 8

Join The Strong for a screening of Insert Coin. The 100-minute film follows the untold story of a small team of geeks working in the back of a Chicago pinball factory that accidentally created the biggest video games of all time. Find out how the group began the last great era of the arcades and before a seismic shift in technology ultimately dooms them. Due to some adult content and language, viewer discretion is advised. Tickets are $8 per person and available here
