The Strong offers behind-the-scenes experiences and unforgettable educational opportunities for adults age 55 and older. Through Museum Mondays for Seniors, individuals and groups can receive discounted admission to the museum, along with a guided tour of one of The Strong’s exhibits or admission to Dancing Wings Butterfly Garden. The Strong offers additional group programs through its Lifelong Learning: Museum Experiences for Adults program. These in-depth experiences include behind-the-scenes exploration of the museum’s archives, collections, and butterfly garden.

Museum Mondays for Seniors

America at Play Guided Tour

A museum staff member is your guide through more than 300 years of American cultural history in a 20-minute tour of The Strong’s America at Play exhibit. Revisit your childhood as you get up close with some of America’s rarest and most iconic playthings. See the first handmade Monopoly set created by Charles Darrow, trace the impact of World War II on toys, marvel at the world’s largest Erector Set, and more. This experience includes general admission to explore the museum before or after the guided tour.

Butterfly Garden Experience

Explore nature play, a favorite pastime of museum founder Margaret Woodbury Strong. This experience includes general museum admission to The Strong museum plus time to stroll Dancing Wings Butterfly Garden—a lush, indoor garden with hundreds of tropical butterflies. During Morpho Magic from November 11, 2018 through January 7, 2019, view hundreds of blue morpho butterflies as they flutter about the garden and take pictures as they land on brightly colorful holiday ornaments.

Robert C. Postal Toy Soldier Day

Join The Strong for a special Museum Mondays for Seniors on November 19. Enjoy a brief presentation by curator Michelle Parnett-Dwyer on the pageantry, pomp, and color of toy military figures at 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. Discover the fascination behind toy soldiers, planes, tanks, and other war-related playthings. Check out a diverse sample of international militaries shown in toy form, including the United States confederate and union soldiers, Japanese samurai armies, and Indian battalions complete with elephants. This experience includes general admission to explore the museum after the 11 a.m. presentation or before the 2 p.m. presentation.

Lifelong Learning: Group Experiences for Adults Age 55 and Older

The Strong offers behind-the-scenes experiences and unforgettable educational opportunities for lifelong learners amid the museum’s world-class collections, interactive exhibit spaces, and indoor and outdoor gardens. These playful experiences are designed to accommodate a range of interests and physical abilities.

Butterfly Talk

Enjoy a classroom-style talk with The Strong’s museum biologist, who will provide fascinating facts and information about butterflies. Then join a guided tour of Upstate New York’s only year-round, indoor butterfly garden. Stroll among lush, tropical foliage and flowers. Encounter hundreds of exotic butterflies from around the world. Participate in a butterfly release when newly emerged butterflies are released into free flight. Spend the remainder of your time on your own exploring the museum.

Behind-the-Scenes at The Strong

Have you ever wondered how exhibits are created or how artifacts are stored? In the company of a museum curatorial team member, enjoy a rare opportunity to visit a state-of-the-art collection storage facility. View an amazing array of artifacts of play, some seldom seen by the public and others awaiting display in upcoming exhibits. Then stop by the museum’s fabrication area to talk with the people who conceptualize and design The Strong’s spectacular exhibits.

Collector’s Corner: Margaret Woodbury Strong

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn about the life and dreams of one of Rochester’s foremost collectors. Who was Margaret Woodbury Strong, and how did her life and collections inspire The Strong museum? A museum archivist introduces you to the museum’s founder through documents, photographs, and other archival materials. Discover how Margaret set the wheels in motion for what would become the world’s largest collection of toys, dolls, board games, video games, and other historic materials related to play at The Strong—the largest museum in the world dedicated to the study and exploration of play.
