January 18 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day)
Learn about cultures from around the globe and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by Celebrating Diversity at The Strong® museum on Monday, January 18 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Embrace creativity and peace through hands-on activities, special displays, and more.
View a display of headwear from around the world, and see and touch materials used to make the hats such as feathers, shells, buttons, and other materials. Join Adriana Hoppe, Spanish translator and interpreter, for an introduction to basic Spanish and learn about the history of traditional Mexican dresses.
Enjoy a performance by Dangerous Signs at 2 p.m., a poetry group from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology. The group’s mission is to represent global community building using a blend of American Sign Language, spoken words, music, and dance. Also, meet members of Art Force Five—superheroes that use the power of creativity to promote peace—and help them create a giant mosaic art piece in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Listen to a dramatic reading of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech at noon.
Then delight in performances of Rainbow Fish: A Shiny New Musical! at 1 and 3 p.m. Written and composed by Alec Michael Powell of Rochester and presented by Spectrum Creative Arts, the delightful musical is an adaptation of the popular children’s book that tells the story of a lonely fish who only wants to be noticed, and how his life is changed forever when he meets Rainbow, a beautiful fish with scales of every color.
All Celebrating Diversity activities are included with general museum admission fees.
