Discover the Digital Sandbox
at The Strong Museum
April 25 & 26

Come in costume and immerse yourself in a virtual world at The Strong® museum during Discover the Digital Sandbox on Saturday, April 25 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, April 26 from 1 to 4 p.m. The weekend is inspired by online communities such as Minecraft and Terraria, which encourage users to imagine, design, and build in open-ended landscapes with few limitations and restrictions.

“Online games with few rules such as Minecraft—which has been downloaded more than 100 million times—have drastically changed the way people connect and play,” says Jon-Paul Dyson, director of The Strong’s International Center for the History of Electronic Games. “They allow users across boundaries of geography and culture to work together to create and maintain enormous custom worlds.”

On Saturday only, attend a theatrical performance of Quest for the Golden Apple: an Unofficial Minecraft Adventure by Allendale Columbia School students at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. This original play is themed after the unofficial Minecraft book The Quest for the Diamond Sword.

“The students at Allendale Columbia created the original play The Quest for the Golden Apple based on the popular game Minecraft. This performance, in conjunction with Allendale Columbia Middle School’s creation of the Discover the Digital Sandbox event, is part of the work they are doing with the MinecraftEDU program, which facilitates the integration of gaming into the classroom and provides products and support that enable educators to teach their students using the game. The program allows my students to use and integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (S.T.E.A.M.) in the real world,” said Jeannie Clinton, faculty member at Allendale Columbia School. “The students are so excited to share this performance with museum guests."

All weekend long:

  • Construct models of popular characters, such as Steve or a creeper from Minecraft.
  • Build whatever your imagination can dream up using a variety of building materials such as DUPLO blocks
  • Act out a fantastical adventure using Minecraft-themed plush and papercraft toys.

All Discover the Digital Sandbox activities are included with general admission fees.
