Fascinating Facts about LEGO®

Hear ye, hear ye! The king and queen invite you to test your castle-building skills at LEGO® Castle Adventure, opening at The Strong museum on Saturday, October 4. The wildly popular building toy behind the exhibit first appeared in 1949 and has been the inspiration for theme parks, video games, books, and movies. Following are some facts about LEGO:

  • Ole Kirk Kristiansen, LEGO company founder, developed the name “LEGO” by using the first two letters of the Danish phrase leg godt, which means “play well.”
  • LEGO Group was founded in 1932, but it did not starting making the iconic LEGO® bricks until 1949.
  • LEGO Group produced the first modern-day minifigure in 1978.
  • LEGO joined The Strong’s National Toy Hall of Fame as part of the original class in 1998.
  • Fortune magazine named LEGO “Toy of the Century” in 2000.
  • Six 8-studded LEGO bricks can combine 915,103,765 ways.
  • LEGO DUPLO® bricks are 8 times the size of the original LEGO brick—yet the two types can connect to one another.
  • LEGO has produced more than 560 billion LEGO parts—more than 80 for every person on the planet.

LEGO Castle Adventure remains on view through February 1. The exhibit was created by The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis in conjunction with LEGO Systems, Inc.
