“King of Rock”
New York State Yo-Yo Contest
at The Strong Museum
Saturday, September 20

See which talented yo-yo competitors have the winning moves during the New York State Yo-Yo Contest at The Strong® museum on Saturday, September 20 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Registration for participants starts at 9 a.m.) Nearly 75 competitors from around the world will descend on Rochester to dazzle museum guests with their slick tricks and flashy, freestyle routines all in the hopes of being crowned the “King of Rock.”

“We couldn’t ask for a better host venue than The Strong museum for this contest,” says Mitch Silver, contest organizer and owner of YoYoSam.com. “Given the museum’s play-based mission and the yo-yos place in its National Toy Hall of Fame, it’s a natural fit to bring these skilled yo-yo competitors to Rochester.”

The New York State Yo-Yo Contest is open to participants worldwide and includes a range of skill levels—from beginners to former champions. (To register as a competitor, visit nystateyoyo.com.) Contestants will battle it out in preliminary and final rounds throughout the day across five categories, including sleeping string tricks, double yo-yo looping tricks, double yo-yo string tricks, offstring yo-yo (where it’s released into the air) tricks, and counterbalance tricks. They will be rated by a panel of judges, including former yo-yo champions Drew Tetz and Isaac Sams.

At 1 p.m., a select group of competitors will perform a special juggling demonstration using a diabolo (a juggling prop that evolved from Chinese yo-yos) and kendama (a Japanese string toy). Museum guests will have the opportunity to meet these yo-yo experts, see their skills up close, and ask questions about their craft.

“We hope to make this a regular event here in Rochester,” says Silver. “It’s a great location and great city, and we couldn’t ask for a better partner than The Strong museum.”

All New York State Yo-Yo Contest activities are open to museum guests for viewing and are included in general museum admission fees.

The event is sponsored by YoYoSam.com.
