The museum offers a variety of hands-on backpack experiences for Cub Scouts, a merit badge program for Boy Scouts, and two unique programs for scouts of any age—Scouts Give Back and Scouts at Play.

Tiger Adventure Self-Guided Backpack
Visit One History Place to discover how family life today is the same or different from 100 years ago. Make a jigsaw puzzle, design a paper bag puppet, and create a family mobile.

Elective #1—It’s a Secret and Elective #4—Play a Game Self-Guided Backpack
Visit the Kid to Kid exhibit to learn about Sign Language then use it to “write” your name. Use a secret code. Tell a story using Native American signs. Play ring toss and other games. Complete up to six elective requirements towards an Arrow Point.

Achievement #8—Cooking and Eating and Elective #12—Be an Artist Self-Guided Backpack
Explore Super Kids Market to learn about nutrition, the USDA My Plate program, and family meal planning. Learn what it’s like to be an artist by sketching, making scenery, mixing colors, creating stencils, and more. Complete up to eight elective requirements towards an Arrow Point.

Elective #10—Masks and Elective #23—Maps Self-Guided Backpack
Enjoy circus-themed activities including making clown and animal masks then look at circus artifacts in the museum’s collections. Practice mapping skills. Complete up to six elective requirements towards an Arrow Point.

Elective #9—Art Self-Guided Backpack
Search for examples of art in the museum’s collections and look at the exhibits through an artist’s perspective. What types of art can you find? What artistic methods have been used? Make a collage, an art mobile, a mosaic, and drawings in different artistic styles. Complete up to six elective requirements towards an Arrow Point.

Webelos

Communicator Activity Badge Self-Guided Backpack
Visit Kid to Kid and see how many forms of communication can be found. Explore a variety of communication methods including telling stories, writing articles, and using body language and secret codes. Talk to the librarian at the museum's Grada Hopeman Gelser Library to find out how books are indexed and tracked.

Boy Scouts

Railroading Merit Badge
Learn about modern freight trains and passenger trains! Use a timetable to plan a trip by rail, learn about railroad company operations and opportunities, discuss the importance of railroad signal and warning devices, and hear about Operation Lifesaver and railroad safety. This program is taught by Operation Lifesaver representatives. Program includes full-day museum admission, all materials, and a pizza lunch. Requirements 1–7 will be completed. Pre-requisite: Scouts must complete requirement #8 in advance and be prepared to discuss with counselor.
