Plan a Backpack Experience

Thank you for selecting The Strong museum for your scout trip.

Registration

Reservations for backpack experiences must be made at least three weeks prior to visit. Call 585-263-2700 to register or for more information.

Choose a convenient date and time during regular museum hours (restrictions may apply) and enjoy self-guided troop activities at your own pace. Times listed for each backpack experience are the minimum recommended to complete badge requirements. Some scouts may need more time to complete works and should plan accordingly.

Full-day general museum admission is included in the backpack experience fee so groups can explore the exhibits before or after their project.

Backpack rental fee is based on the number of scouts in group. A minimum of four scouts is required per backpack. Scout badges are not included.

Payment information

Full, non-refundable payment must be made within two weeks of booking a backpack experience. Cash, check, money order, or credit card (VISA, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover) may be used to pay for the entire group. Checks and money orders should be made payable to The Strong and must include the name and address of the responsible party.

Adult chaperons required

Adult chaperons are required to accompany scouts ages five to 15 on museum visits. One adult chaperon admitted to the museum free for every five scouts attending (1:5 adult-to-scout ratio). Adult chaperons are not required for scouts ages 16 to 18. Additional adults, who are not museum members, pay full admission.

Museum guidelines

Please review the museum guidelines before your visit.

  • Chaperons must stay with their group of children while at the museum and are responsible for the safety and behavior of those children.
  • Chaperons must immediately report any emergency or child separated from their group to a museum staff member.
  • Be considerate of other guests in the museum.
  • Food and drink are not allowed in the exhibits. They can damage exhibits and artifacts.

Arrival

Check in at the admissions desk to receive your reserved backpack. Review the accompanying the leader guidebook. Guidebook pages and material packets are color coordinated.

During your trip

Backpacks include all materials necessary for leaders to guide scouts through specific badge requirements. Activities can be done in any order.

Backpack activities are completed in museum exhibit spaces. Backpack reservations do not include a separate room. However, the backpack guidebook contains suggestions for finding quiet spaces for your group to work. Your group may need to use floor space.

When your group is finished, please return the backpack and its contents to the admissions desk.
