Celebrate the season with winter-themed fiction and non-fiction literature. Students engage in activities related to classic winter tales such as Jan Brett’s captivating adaptation of the traditional Ukrainian tale, The Mitten. Other activities focus on reading comprehension, writing skills, and observation. Celebrate the wonders of the season with games, crafts, and music in this day of wintery fun.
Themed visits give students a chance to experience the museum in new ways. Activities begin at 9:45 a.m. and end at 2 p.m., but classes may arrive and depart at anytime during that period.
Before your visit
- Divide students into groups of 5 or fewer and assign each group a chaperon.
- Discuss field trip expectations and lunch plans with chaperons and students.
- Role-play museum etiquette with students.
During your Theme Day experience
- Museum educators will be ready to greet you with activity guides and maps.
- Exciting, theme-related activity stations will be staffed by museum educators.
- Students and chaperons will enjoy free exploration time throughout the museum. Students and chaperons must stay together throughout the visit.
Activities to enhance your Theme Day experience
- Read Jan Brett’s book The Mitten with your class at least once before your visit. Gather other books by Brett and read them with your class.
- Make a cooperative woodland mural. Have each student draw a woodland animal, attach it to a Popsicle stick, and add them to the mural. Create and add a large, white, paper mitten to the mural. Ask students to take turns retelling parts of The Mitten using the animals from the mural.
- Organize a mitten drive to accept donations of mittens for children in need.
