Your lesson will take place in the Super Kids Market exhibit. This kid-sized supermarket inspired by a real Wegmans store includes deli, meat, seafood, and bakery departments filled with highly interactive stations for dramatic role-playing. Bake bread at the “oven”; scan bar-coded products at six working check-out registers; host your own television cooking show; and much more.

Lesson extensions for before or after your visit

The following activities are designed for your class to enjoy before or after your museum visit. Familiarizing students with the lesson concepts can enrich your museum experience.

Eat right

Talk with your students about the new My Plate for Kids (found on the USDA’s website: www.choosemyplate.gov). The pyramid and these lessons emphasize balance and variety for healthy eating. Familiarize students with the food groups and specific foods found in each group. This might be done by creating a team to represent each food group. Have each team create a collage, song, or dance to demonstrate some foods found in its food group.

For younger students, bring a grocery bag (cloth or paper) containing a variety of foods. Have students unpack the bag and put the foods into boxes representing the food groups.

Snack attack

A variety of foods make up healthy snacks or meals. Ask students to bring one food from their food group to school. Place all foods on a table or in a large basket. During the day, pairs or small groups of students can create healthy snacks from the food assortment. You might even share some of the snack creations. Be especially sensitive to students with food allergies.

Healthy eating and physical activity

Ten tips to help children eat healthy and stay active:

  1. Start your day with breakfast.
  2. Get moving.
  3. Snack smart.
  4. Work up a sweat.
  5. Balance food choices—don’t eat only one thing.
  6. Get fit with family or friends.
  7. Eat more grains, fruits, and vegetables.
  8. Join in physical activities at school.
  9. Remember that foods aren’t good or bad.
  10. Make healthy eating and physical activity fun!
