Enrollment Period Begins for the
2013–2014 Woodbury Preschool Year
at the National Museum of Play® at The Strong®

Woodbury Preschool at the National Museum of Play will accept enrollment applications on a first-come, first-served basis beginning December 1, 2012 for both morning and afternoon programs during the 2013–2014 school year. Eligible students must be three or four years old on or before December 1, 2013.

At Woodbury Preschool, children learn and develop in playful activities set among the museum’s dynamic, hand-on exhibits. Specially designed classrooms, set apart from the museum galleries, provide a familiar, comfortable, and manageable environment for preschoolers.  Weather permitting, children also enjoy experiences in a secure outdoor play space designed for the exclusive use of the preschool.

The curriculum is Reggio Emilia-inspired and responsive to the interests of the children in the class. This approach uses an “emergent” curriculum philosophy that encourage teachers and students to work together to plan the curriculum and create projects. Guided by teachers who facilitate their explorations, children delve deeply into topics that fascinate and stimulate learning. Small and large group activities involve art, music, cooperative games, movement, pre-reading, math, and other age-appropriate experiences.

The preschool staff consider parents to be school partners and encourage classroom visits and parental involvement in class projects. Parents may arrange to observe their children through a two-way mirror in the classroom’s observation area. A home visit for all new students and a get-acquainted play date at the museum kick off the program each year, and parent-teacher conferences are held regularly throughout the school year. (A video of the preschool is available on the museum’s web site.)

How to apply: Applications can be requested by phone at 585-263-2700, Monday through Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. or downloaded anytime at museumofplay.org/education/woodbury-school. Enrollment applications must be accompanied by a non-refundable $45 application fee. Completed applications may be submitted by mail (Woodbury Preschool at the National Museum of Play, One Manhattan Square, Rochester, New York 14607) or dropped off during museum hours at the museum admissions desk. A limited number of needs-based partial scholarships are available. New students will be notified of placement or waiting list status beginning February 14, 2013.

More information about the preschool will be available during a parent information night on Thursday, January 17, 2013 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Registration is not required.
