Right you are. The genre came a long way from Archie and Veronica... Incidentally, mythmaking seems a permanent feature of human society even as modern technical means solve mystery and increase understanding. In fact, though not enough time has lapsed for comic book stories to become classical literature, our pantheon of superheroes rivals the Greeks' creativity. Our attitude is more playful, too, as we better understand the difference between playful, entertaining myth and the forces that govern us.

Lord knows we could use a few superheroes today. It is nice to see that Bizarro World is still alive and kicking. The age old wish for someone capable of facing our problems for us has been around since ancient times, with comics taking the place of various gods, demi-gods, etc. as hopeful answers to problems we as individuals were unable or unwilling to face on a personal level. The evolution to graphic novels expanded this into even darker and murkier realms.
